The Cisco Webex Share: Wireless Capable Sharing Device

Written by Sean Barr | Apr 15

We're talking about the Cisco WebEx share, the Cisco WebEx share enables you to share content to any display that has an HDMI port. In order to use the HDMI port you will need the WebEx teams application.

The actual Webex Share device looks a triangular sized device with an HDMI connection and a slot for a Cat5 Connection or Cat6 Connection that supports POV which will get a DHCP IP address.

Once you have your HDMI plugged in the display is going to tell you go to this web address and enter in a key that you're going get from your WebEx control hub. Then you are going to identify a device or a location for this device and it's going to download some code.

The WebEx cloud is going to manage the software on the device so if it needs updates, you won't need to worry about that because it's going to come directly from the cloud and just work. It's a simple device that you can attach to any HDMI port and you're good to go from a sharing perspective.

Let’s walk through setting up the Cisco Webex Share with a TV. First connected Cisco WebEx Share to our display and now we need to register our WebEx Share with the Cisco WebEx cloud in control hub (admin.webex.com/devices).

When the WebEx Share boots up and it gives you an IP address to set your browser to, you browse to that IP address. Once there it's going to ask you to generate a code you're going to go the WebEx control hub, Add a Device, and create a place.

Add a WebEx share as a new Place and give the new place a name for this example we named the new place “Webex Share”.

Selected “Other Cisco Webex device”.

Select the default setting “Free Calling”.

Once you have completed those steps, it’s going to give you the code.

With the generated code, you're going key that code into the WebEx share web UI.

Once the generated code has been entered, it's going to register to the cloud download updated software. After it has reload it will show you the below page.

Now you can wirelessly see this device from Cisco teams! In Cisco teams you see the WebEx Share in the connect to a device section, click on that device and click share your screen and up comes your screen on the display!

Essentially we can turn in any TV that has an HDMI port into a wirelessly capable sharing device and that's done through a combination of the WebEx Share and Cisco Webex Teams. That's it! That's how easy it is to set up a Cisco WebEx Share and turn any display into a wirelessly capable collaboration device.
