Upgrading Cisco SD-WAN vManage, vSmart, vBond, and vEdge

Hello everyone, today I’ll be going over how to upgrade your SD-WAN network or deployment. This guide includes how to upgrade devices such as, vManage, vSmart, vBond, and vEdge routers. All upgrades should be done during a maintenance window if you are doing this on a live production network.

Now that I’ve gone through the general disclaimer we can get to the actual fun stuff. Illustration below shows my current network and the upgrade path or sequence. We will want to start with upgrading the vManage, then continue down the list.

First, we will want to head over to Cisco.com and get our software downloaded to our local machine. Here are download the image we want under “SD-WAN Software Update”.

For my vEdge device I’ll need to download this software.

Once we have our software downloaded, we will then log into our vManage dashboard. Head over to Maintenance -> Software Repository.

Here we will upload our software to the vManage device. Below these images show the overall upload process.

Once we have the files uploaded to vManage we can start the upgrade process. We will need to head over to Maintenance -> Software Upgrade. Select vManage and then head over to the upgrade. This will create a partition for our software version.

We can expand and see the progress of our upgrade.

Success! Completed green check!

Once the installation is complete, we will need to activate and switch over to this new partition we created. Again, we need to head over to Maintenance -> Software Upgrade.

Once we proceed and select the Activate button, we will be logged out of vManage. vManage will log you out and reboot.
