Third Times a Charm: Cisco Live Day 3
Posted by Eden Penman

Cisco Live day three started with a security keynote with Cisco Chief Security & Trust Officer, John N. Stewart. Stewart opened with bold statements about IoT and today's digital transformation. He dove into many of the dilemma's IT teams today:

  • Over 70% of execs are saying it’s the risk slowing us down
  • 2/5 execs have stopped a project because of security
  • Network visibility to new cyber threats

Cisco's new Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA) provides additional visibility into encrypted traffic (without decrypting it) at both global and local scale.

Stewart demonstrated the importance of network security today with a showcase of web blocks for all users connected to network at Cisco Live. He also shared the Cisco Umbrella (formerly known as OpenDNS) blocking analytics via the platform dashboard.

"Visibility shows vitality of network and business, and is essential to the vitality of today’s businesses." [Stewart] Today cyber crime rings are multi billion dollar “business”. They are run as a business and are as well run and distributed as any other business today. To protect ourselves against these cyber criminals we have to go faster, meaning we need to enable solutions that detect, alert and remediate faster.

This weeks new Petya ransomware attack have emphasized the urgency for today's businesses to focus on security, and for today's security vendors to provide solutions that will protect the enterprise.

Stewart was joined on stage by Former White House CIO, Theresa Payton. Payton shared that she would like the government to share real-life analytics, and play a role in creating incentive plans for money businesses are spending on security.

Stewart asked her what she thinks is working in the industry, and her response included:

  • Analytics
  • Behavioral based security tactics
  • Sharing threat intelligence

She did note that with all the things that are working in the industry she still feels that the [security] industry needs to take more accountability and not rely so much on (or blame) businesses.

Payton's final piece of advice for the audience was to assume all security measures you implement will fail you, and keep that idea in mind as you address how you store your data.

Key takeaways from the keynote were:

  • Cisco's focus on simplifying security
  • Today there is a vendor “buffet” for security and Cisco aims to simplify a single vendor solution
  • Faster detection, alerts, and notification/ remediation is key
  • Think of money saved when you can find threats immediately
  • Hacking is almost an enterprise business today
  • More businesses, professional and execs are talking about security
  • Stay on top of security
  • UPGRADE YOUR DEVICES!!

Showcase session for day 3 included:

  • Cloud Strategy for a Multicloud World: Kip Compton, VP, Cloud Platform & Solutions Group,  discussed Cisco’s customer focused, multicloud Cloud Strategy. He shared how the Cisco Cloud portfolio is helping customers innovate and also maintain balance while managing the complexity of a multicloud environment.
  • 5G Enabling Enterprises: Arun Bhikshesvaran, Vice President, Head of Strategy Development Ericsson North America, Ericsson INC. discussed 5G and it's capability to enable enterprises to move into new markets and build new revenue streams. 5G brings with it a new element: the industrial internet, enabling new as-a-service business models. It will enable more secure transactions and expand the battery life of IoT devices by 10X, creating opportunities for new use cases that we haven’t yet dreamed of yet.
  • Simplifying Operations in the New Enterprise Network: Ronnie Ray, Sr. Director - PM, Enterprise Network Transformation, Cisco shared how Cisco is reinventing the network with policy-based automation for network provisioning across ALL network domains. Cisco DNA is making it easier to realize business outcomes rather than managing the network with the Network. Intuitive.

Integrating Cisco Security with network technologies increases visibility into users, devices and emerging threats

Tonight Cisco is treating Cisco Live attendees to a live performance by Bruno Mars, and tomorrow they conclude Cisco Live 2017. Our team is enjoying their last night in Las Vegas, and is excited there is still one more day of #CLUS magic!
