Creating CLI Template in vManage
Posted by William Panameno

Creating device templates in Cisco vManage is a crucial skill for network administrators looking to streamline and automate the management of their Cisco SD-WAN infrastructure. By using device templates, you can standardize configurations across multiple devices, ensuring consistency and reducing the likelihood of configuration errors.

Today we will be looking at a quick “How-To” on how to go about creating a device CLI Template inside of Cisco vManage. Let’s get to it!

Step 1: Log in to Cisco vManage

Step 2: Navigate to Configuration Templates

  • On the upper left corner of the GUI, click the three solid lines. This will display a dropdown menu. Navigate to “Configuration” à “Templates”.

Step 3: Create a Device Template

  • Navigate to “Device Templates”. The Device Templates tab displays a list of all the device “Type” templates that have been created in Cisco vManage, as well as how many devices are attached to each template.

  • On the left-hand side, under the search bar, click on “Create Template” highlighted in blue, and choose the option “CLI Template”.

  • Next, we need to input some information such as device type, and template name. Also, we are given a CLI text field at the bottom where we need to input the commands we want to apply to this template. These are the commands we are telling vManage to push to our SDWAN routers when the template is applied.

  • Once you fill out the necessary information, click Add, at the bottom. This will add our newly created template to the “Feature Template” list.

Step 4: Confirm new template has been added

  • After clicking “Add” navigate back to the Device Templates page. At the top, to the right of the “Device templates” tab is the “Feature Templates” tab, click it.

  • Here you will see a similar page as the Device templates page. This however, is a list of all the “FEATURE” templates created in Vmanage, as oppose to the device “Type” templates.

  • At a high level, the difference is, with Type templates you are telling Vmanage the TYPE of device you want to create the template for. In the Feature template tab, you are telling Vmanage what FEATURES, in this case Session Timeout, will be implemented when this template is applied to a device.

  • To confirm our template was added, we can search for the name of the template we just created, you will see our template, like in the screenshot. In this case we created the Session Timeout template. Furthermore, you can view or edit the template by navigating to the three dots on the far right of the template.

You now know how to create a basic CLI template in vManage. The great thing about templates is that you do the hard work one time and next time around, say you add a new device, you go back to the template and associate it to the device or devices and the configuration is pushed to it.

Stay tuned because next time, I will show you how to actually apply a template to a single or multiple devices at once!
