This week I’m in Barcelona at Cisco’s Marketing Velocity conference learning about Cisco’s marketing strategies for the year and better ways to get new technology content to our customers. In today’s digital era, businesses have become completely borderless. With so many competitive solutions, customers aren’t just buying a product or service, they are buying an amazing experience. So much so that 53% of buyers choose their vendor based on buyers experience according to CEB. It’s up to us to provide our customers with quality solutions, experiences, and a relevant human experience.
Rejuvenated, inspired, and re-energized. Those three words best describe how I felt leaving INBOUND 2017. And, what perfect timing for a new gust of wind in my marketing sails! Every year in June and July we see a burst of new energy in our industry as Cisco releases new technologies at Cisco Live, and as they close their fiscal year. As that momentum begins to slow a fresh burst of energy and new marketing initiatives centered around customer delight is an ideal way to round out 2017.
The final day of INBOUND 2017 kicked off with a keynote featuring Pixar Animation Studios co-founder, Dr. Ed Catmull. Catmull shared his success and failures at Pixar, as well as his insights about creativity today. He discussed the importance of change, responding to challenges, listening, empathizing, and making mistakes. The goal when founding Pixar was to build a sustainable culture. He enlightened the audience on the struggles of each Pixar film, and shared that Pixar “does not make movies for kids. They make them for adults – kids live in an adult world and are trying to figure it out.” He encouraged everyone to keep trying new big projects, because even for Pixar every film struggles before being good. Ego must be removed for creativity and “magic” to happen, and “it is easier to correct errors than to try and prevent them altogether”.
INBOUND is HubSpot’s annual marketing conference, and I am in Boston this week for INBOUND take two! The conference kicked off last night with an inspirational keynote featuring best-selling author Brenē Brown. She spoke about her new book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone. She also talked about how true belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are – it requires us to be who we are.
I had the pleasure of spending this week enjoying Cisco’s 10th Marketing Velocity conference in Chicago, IL. Cisco Marketing Velocity brings partners from all over the world together to hear from Cisco executives and industry experts to help get inspired, energize marketing practices, and learn what’s coming next. The world of marketing has changed drastically since Marketing Velocity debuted, as was evident when Michelle Chiantera noted the topic “Will Social Selling Impact the B2B Market?” from the first agenda 10 years ago.
